"You are never more like Jesus then when you give and when you serve". This phrase from a sermon in church has resonated in me for a very long time and I am determined to make it my goal in 2011. One of the ways that I intend to fulfill this mission is to serve with Food for the Hungry in Peru, August 30 - September 11, 2011.
I have been working within our own community on several projects, Habitat for Humanity and I-Help, but desire to make an impact globally. Now that my children are grown and my husband Richard and I are empty nesters, I hope to make a difference in another part of the world.
This trip to Peru is a dream come true. I was scheduled to take this trip a few years ago, but through the sudden loss of my father-in-law, I was unable to attend. So with "Shorty" beside me, we will take the trip together and what a great project we will be involved in as we work to provide a safe place "Oikos Schools" for the victims of domestic violence. In the Peruvian communities that Food for the Hungry serves, 80% of the families are victims of this abuse and the children have no safe haven. The Oikos schools are spaces in the community that focus on building strong family relationships and provide sources for the families to break the cycle of domestic violence.
We will spend time with the children and families in the Lima area and provide a source of hope and healing. Please join me on my journey and walk alongside of me.
