Dear Friends and Family,
We are delighted to have the opportunity to serve in the Mathare Valley Slum in Kenya again this summer with Eastside Christian Church. There are over 600,000 people living there in sub poverty conditions, existing on about $1 a day – or less. Many go without food if they are unable to find work that day. In previous mission trips, we have come to love and respect these gracious, hard-working people. We feel compelled to help, and invite you to join us in blessing them.
We are so excited to be able to participate in many of the projects that our Global Compassion Team has planned for this year. We will be visiting families affected by the devastating fires in the Bondeni community, bringing them food, water, and dishes, and building a playground for the children there. In the Baba Dogo community, we are providing a VBS with carnival games for about 1,000 children over several days. About 150 Pangani 5th graders will be treated to a safari just outside Nairobi. We will provide solar lights to families in many communities, along with the hope of Jesus, the Light of the world. There will be a training program for parents of disabled children, with childcare provided, and training for pastors’ wives to start and facilitate MOPs programs for mothers in their communities.
We are partnering with Missions of Hope International, the organization which has been educating children and helping families in Mathare since 2000. We will host a women’s conference for about 600 employees of MOHI, including teachers, cooks, cleaning people, etc., most of whom live in the slum. The men will also have an event. We are honored to recognize these staff members who give so much of themselves, and to give them the gift of this day just for them.
We feel blessed to have this opportunity to help those in such need. We have been training and preparing since January for the work ahead, and there is still much to be done, including raising the necessary funds. We humbly ask you to consider helping. All team members must help raise funds for these projects and our travel to Kenya. Paul and I are responsible for raising $5,990 by May 30th, with deadlines to meet along the way.
We would be honored if you would pray for us…for preparation, for our health and ability to serve, for our journey, our ministry and for the spiritual battles surely ahead. We would be so grateful if you would be willing to help with the work we are doing by contributing to our mission fund.
