Local Hero, Michael Murphy, was born and raised on Long Island where he served as a Town of Brookhaven lifeguard at Lake Ronkonkokma. Michael graduated from Penn State University with Honors, and instead of attending Law School, joined the Navy SEALs.
He was 29 years old in June 2005, when he perished in a fierce firefight in mountainous terrain along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border in Operation Red Wings.
He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions.

The LT Michael P. Murphy Scholarship Foundation is a 501c(3) Charity and there are no administrative costs and all Board Members are volunteers so all funds are used for scholarships only.
Special Operations Warrior Foundation ensures full financial assistance for a post-secondary degree from an accredited two or four-year college, university, technical, or trade school; and offers family and educational counseling, including in-home tutoring, to the surviving children of Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps special operations personnel who lose their lives in the line of duty.
The Lone Survivor Foundation restores, empowers, and renews hope for wounded service members and their families through health, wellness, and therapeutic support.
