About the photographer:

Preston Slaughter is a professional photographer, a teacher, and an avid story teller. She grew up overseas, in Hong Kong, and has spent a large portion of her life traveling with her camera in hand. She has worked in education in various settings, from teaching English in Thailand, to volunteering at the Happy Kids Center for children affected by earthquakes in Nepal, to teaching kids yoga where she currently resides in Denver, CO. She is a strong advocate of mindfulness and encouraged playtime for young children.

Her approach to photography is a documentary one, encouraging viewers to ask questions. Why are playgrounds imperative to a child’s learning ability? What is mindfulness, and how can we help to incorporate movement and breath into education systems all over the world? She has teamed up with East African Playgrounds to bring playgrounds to students in Jinja, Uganda. Her goal is to paint a picture of East African Playground’s mission through her unique, eye-catching images.

About East African Playgrounds:

East African Playgrounds is a UK-based non-profit aiming to bring playgrounds to children in Uganda and other East African countries.

Think about your childhood. Are some of your fondest memories of school on the playground or in the classroom? Do you believe in the value of having play time factored into the school day? Is this even something you’ve ever considered before? Now think about how the lack of a playground, play area or play time, might have an impact on a young child’s development.

The truth is that almost every school curriculum in the West includes allotted time for some type of play. Playtime is just as important for students as classroom time. It builds cognitive development, social skills, encourages imagination, and of course allows children physical exercise and much-needed movement.

“Play is the universal language of a child.”

East African Playgrounds’ mission truly embodies this statement. By training and hiring disadvantaged young adults to weld and implement playgrounds, training teachers on how to utilize playgrounds as an education resource, as well as forming a community playground outreach committee, the nonprofit has had incredible success bringing playgrounds to children all over Eastern Africa through it’s multilayered four-step program.

Changing worlds with photography.

Donors like you have helped photographers fundraise 100% of project-related costs since 2014!

Every year, our photographers and videographers donate hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of their time to document the work of grassroots initiatives that are making a real change in this world where it is most needed. By capturing, honouring and witnessing humanity at its best, we are not only inspiring many, but we are forging new narratives of what is and what is possible.

You can help by supporting our photographers and videographers (See the side bar to the right to see fundraisers for our most recent recruits).

Each of our official photographers/videographers is assigned a GroupRev fundraising page by PWB upon acceptance. These pages are a privilege we offer that are intended to make our programs accessible to all and enable our volunteer photographers/videographers to raise their program fees and subsidize or cover these necessary project-related expenses:

  • Airfare
  • Visa's
  • Vaccinations
  • Health Insurance
  • Travel Insurance

The following expenses are the sole responsibility of the photographer/videographer:

  • Privately arranged travel / Equipment & Equipment Insurance / Software / Extra Baggage Fees / Donation perks / Clothing / Postage/Postcard / Prints / Etc.

Photographers Without Borders® (PWB) envisions a world where we all put ourselves in each others' shoes and work together. Our mission is to inform and inspire positive change by visually communicating the ways that grassroots initiatives are addressing problems in their communities. PWB is registered as a charity in the United States with 501(c)(3) status and is registered as a not-for-profit organization in Canada. All donations are calculated in US Dollars and are tax-deductible for Americans and Canadians with US income.

PWB is not responsible for any donations made outside of these pages.

Any overage amounts raised on GroupRev will be donated and disbursed 50/50, between the photographer's/videographer's assigned cause and PWB, which is also a volunteer-run organization.
