* Update: I've returned from Uganda - this NGO is amazing - and am currently working on the photos & stories. You can read my first report from the field here.
About this fundraiser:
I'll be traveling to Jinja, Uganda in March to photograph the work of X-SUBA Sport4Development. This nonprofit was established in 2013, centered initially around getting underprivileged children into basketball. It has since expanded to include children in other sports and games. They also offer health services, life skills, and educational opportunities.
Providing these opportunities to children who otherwise wouldn't have them is a wonderful way to invest in our future.
Any donations of $100 or greater will receive a signed print from the trip once I return.
1. What makes you passionate about helping X-SUBA Sport4Development Uganda ( http://xsuba.org)?
I owe a lot of my own opportunities & success to the sports programs that my parents got me into when I was young. I was very active in soccer (or football, for the rest of the world), cross-country running, golf, and track & field. Each of these activities contributed different elements to my growth. All of them taught me about teamwork, responsibility, goal-setting, physical fitness, and mindfulness. I made some great friends and was an overall better person thanks to these programs.
Now it's my turn to be a part of providing the same opportunities to other children. Programs like X-SUBA are especially important in underprivileged communities, where alternative activities can be crippling to their potential. Everyone deserves chances like this, but not everyone has access.
2. How do you believe your photography can make a difference for them?
Photography is an incredibly powerful tool. I've seen first-hand with other nonprofits I've worked with how photography can help tell a story, demonstrate the nonprofit's potential, and spur others to support their mission. I'm looking forward to being a part of their team for a couple of weeks. I can't wait to show the rest of the world what they're doing, the impact it's making in the lives of others, and their plans for the future. Even just being there and showing the children that there is outside interest in them can help inspire them.
3. What message would you like to send to your supporters?
Everyone can personally relate to a program like X-SUBA because we've all been touched by similar programs whether we realize it or not. All of us have participated in some kind of organized activity, be it sports, arts, computers, etc., that has influenced who we are today. We all owe our success, in one way or another, to a mentor or activity that taught us these necessary life skills. Invest in the future of the world by paying it forward.
BIO:
I’m an Air Force combat veteran and pilot by trade, serving for ten years, including two deployments to Afghanistan. Towards the end of that ten years I realized that I needed a different pace in my life, so in 2012 I bought a 27-foot sailboat and sailed from North Carolina to the Caribbean. This was a life-changing experience and one that I still continue on a part-time basis.
During the journey, I accidentally stumbled upon a small island off the coast of Haiti. I was introduced to a nonprofit that has been helping them improve educational and nutritional programs on their island. At that time I only considered myself a landscape photographer, but the experience in Haiti really brought about a passion for documentary photography and working with nonprofits. I'm still involved with this group today, in addition to a number of other conservation and humanitarian groups.
I call Lake Tahoe home and enjoy all of the year-round activities offered in this mountain paradise. These include backpacking, hiking, skiing, snowshoeing, sailing, and kayaking. I also volunteer on two search and rescue teams when I'm not traveling.
Changing worlds with photography.
Donors like you have helped photographers fundraise 100% of project-related costs since 2014!
Every year, our photographers and videographers donate hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of their time to document the work of grassroots initiatives that are making a real change in this world where it is most needed. By capturing, honouring and witnessing humanity at its best, we are not only inspiring many, but we are forging new narratives of what is and what is possible.
You can help by supporting our photographers and videographers (See the side bar to the right to see fundraisers for our most recent recruits).
Each of our official photographers/videographers is assigned a GroupRev fundraising page by PWB upon acceptance. These pages are a privilege we offer that are intended to make our programs accessible to all and enable our volunteer photographers/videographers to raise their program fees and subsidize or cover these necessary project-related expenses:
- Airfare
- Visa's
- Vaccinations
- Health Insurance
- Travel Insurance
The following expenses are the sole responsibility of the photographer/videographer:
- Privately arranged travel / Equipment & Equipment Insurance / Software / Extra Baggage Fees / Donation perks / Clothing / Postage/Postcard / Prints / Etc.
Photographers Without Borders® (PWB) envisions a world where we all put ourselves in each others' shoes and work together. Our mission is to inform and inspire positive change by visually communicating the ways that grassroots initiatives are addressing problems in their communities. PWB is registered as a charity in the United States with 501(c)(3) status and is registered as a not-for-profit organization in Canada. All donations are calculated in US Dollars and are tax-deductible for Americans and Canadians with US income.
PWB is not responsible for any donations made outside of these pages.
Any overage amounts raised on GroupRev will be donated and disbursed 50/50, between the photographer's/videographer's assigned cause and PWB, which is also a volunteer-run organization.
