The Power of Visual Communication
Photographers Without Borders (PWB) is a non-profit collective of journalists, photographers, filmmakers and passionate storytellers dedicated to documenting and producing stories and content that inspires understanding of the world. PWB documents efforts by grassroots organizations and NGO's by providing them with captivating images and video, donated to tell their story, raise awareness around their causes and educate through the power of visual communication.
American photographer Gary L. Friedman (www.FriedmanArchives.com) has been selected by Photographers Without Borders to document the achievements of "Hearts for Hue", a humanitarian NGO looking to help rebuilt one of the hardest-hit cities of the Vietnam war.
Friedman's goal with his photography is to raise awareness around humanitarian and environmental issues globally. He focuses on documenting the candid and capturing moments that inspire a call-to-action.
Photography and filmmaking are valuable ways of communicating messages, sharing perspectives, fostering cross-cultural understanding and inspiring others. - Danielle Da Silva, PWB Co-Founder & CEO
The Story
Founded in 2007, this NGO’s mission is to create a real and lasting positive change for poor residents in Thua Thien Hue, Vietnam. This under-served community includes those living with physical disabilities, mental challenges, families impacted by Agent Orange as well as residents who have been resettled into the area. This NGO provide assistance and support by giving them access to quality education, health care services, equal economic development opportunities, and improved environmental conditions
The Project
While in Vietnam, Friedman will be documenting and creating images that show and tell the stories of families and local communities impacted by the good work of HfH, and to build awareness around the difficulties of life for resettled families.
Every organization and community, no matter how big or small, has a unique story worth telling.
HfH projects cover a lot of territory, from water supply / sanitation to microfinancing to early childhood education (ensuring that these are systemic solutions and not just bandaids).
Photographer Background
Gary L. Friedman is a professional photographer who has traveled the world with his cameras and runs the stock image website FriedmanArchives.com. He has also written several highly-acclaimed e-books on digital imaging. His photography and writing has been published in magazines, newspapers, and books worldwide, and he is associate editor of CameraCraft magazine in the UK, the antithesis of your typical photo magazine. He was also listed in the Guinness Book of World Records for building the world's smallest telephone way back in 1980 (before cell phones or cordless phones were around).
Before graduating to photography he was a rocket scientist for NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, where he patented the image authentication system now used in high-end digital cameras from Canon and Nikon.
Gary's best-known works are the 1988 "Peace Child in Latvia", a photojournalistic documentary about a historic exchange between Soviet and American high-school student back in the days of the cold war, and his 2003 China Blog about his adventures teaching English in China.
What your donations will support
The financial goal covers expenses directly related to the project, which includes cost of PWB project fee, equipment rentals and essentials such as vaccinations, airfare, insurance and visa. As this project is entirely self-funded, your generous support will provide Gary with the opportunity to support HfH in raising awareness and showcasing their generous humanitarian work, story and projects through the power of visual communication. Donations are tax-deductible for the US and Canadians with US income.
All funds raised in addition to our goal will go towards Hearts for Hue organization to support their work.
Please take a moment to support this project today, as well as encourage your network to get on board and spread the word via Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, a blog post or simply through old school word-of-mouth!

Portfolio & Press
Every year, our photographers and videographers donate hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of their time to document the work of grassroots initiatives that are making a real change in this world where it is most needed. By capturing, honouring and witnessing humanity at its best, we are not only inspiring many, but we are forging new narratives of what is and what is possible.
You can help by supporting our photographers and videographers (See the side bar to the right to see fundraisers for our most recent recruits).
Each of our official photographers/videographers is assigned a GroupRev fundraising page by PWB upon acceptance. These pages are a privilege we offer that are intended to make our programs accessible to all and enable our volunteer photographers/videographers to raise their program fees and subsidize or cover these necessary project-related expenses:
- Airfare
- Visa's
- Vaccinations
- Health Insurance
- Travel Insurance
The following expenses are the sole responsibility of the photographer/videographer:
- Privately arranged travel / Equipment & Equipment Insurance / Software / Extra Baggage Fees / Donation perks / Clothing / Postage/Postcard / Prints / Etc.
Photographers Without Borders® (PWB) envisions a world where we all put ourselves in each others' shoes and work together. Our mission is to inform and inspire positive change by visually communicating the ways that grassroots initiatives are addressing problems in their communities. PWB is registered as a charity in the United States with 501(c)(3) status and is registered as a not-for-profit organization in Canada. All donations are calculated in US Dollars and are tax-deductible for Americans and Canadians with US income.
PWB is not responsible for any donations made outside of these pages.
Any overage amounts raised on GroupRev will be donated with the photographers direction, 100% to the Organization, 100% to PWB or split 50/50, between the photographer's/videographer's assigned cause and PWB, which is also a volunteer-run organization.
PLEASE DONATE GENEROUSLY !
All donations are calculated in US Dollars and are tax-deductible for Americans and Canadians with US income.
