Changing worlds with storytelling
Donors like you have helped photographers fundraise project-related costs since 2014!
Hello! You can read more about the mission of Photographers Without Borders below, but I wanted to describe a little bit about this specific project first.
No More Drownings
I'll be traveling to coastal Peru in February 2022, to the small surf town of Huanchaco.
Living with the ocean is a necessity here. However, drownings are a major problem because many children don't have access to water safety programs or know how to swim due to their economic status.
I will be spending two weeks with a nonprofit that is working to give these children the tools they need to
- Confidently swim, fish, and have fun in their environment!
- Be good stewards of their oceans & rivers through sustainable practices
- Build a foundation of life skills to use in other aspects of their lives
- Bring their experiences in environmental education to their friends and family, sharing their new knowledge
Drowning is the leading cause of accidental deaths worldwide; earlier in 2021 the United Nations formally recognized drownings as a public health crisis in low and middle-income nations, where 90% of drownings occur.
A project like this holds a special place in my heart, as I benefitted from similar programs when I was a child. These programs gave me a deep appreciation for the ocean, an understanding of why the health of the oceans is so vital to our survival on land and inspired me to live on a sailboat for a few years, sailing thousands of miles and documenting local life with the ocean. I hope these children can find the same inspiration.
I'll be photographing this nonprofit and documenting its work, its challenges, and its successes. The photographs will be used for fundraising, awareness, and further efforts to keep the nonprofit going and successful for years to come, reducing the number of preventable deaths due to drowning.
This will be my second project with Photographers Without Borders; my first was to Uganda to document a youth sports program. I love the work! It's what gives me drive and purpose. I really felt lost without being able to do projects like this during the pandemic.
Your support will not be forgotten. As a token of appreciation, I will send you a signed print from the trip once I return.
All funds will go towards travel costs, insurance, and fees, with all remaining funds going directly to the nonprofit.
Thank you,
John Peltier
