Help With Medical Bills and Housing

Cancer Survivor with Recurring Medical Problems Seeks Assistance Preview

Thank you for taking a moment to read our story. In 2003 my wife went in for surgery to remove part of her colon due to Crohn's disease. When the surgeon started the procedure he found that Beth was laden with Cancer in her body. As a result she endured a 13 hour surgery and had her entire colon removed, an emergency hysterectomy, all her lymphnodes from her knees to shoulders were removed as well.

The Doctors diagnosed her with Stage IV cancer and gave her 6-9 months to live. Beth was in a bed in our living room for 3 months trying to recover while undergoing radiation and chemotherapy. I am happy to share that she beat it and survived against the odds!

However, here we are 10+ years later and the radiation has caused significant long term damage to some of her internal organs and she will be going in for another major surgery that will require significant recovery time. On top of all that she has a deep bone infection in her pelvic bone diagnosed as Lysteria (a very rare infection that affects only 1600 people a year) and is on an IV for the next 4-6 weeks. No surgery can be performed until this rare infection is cleared up.

In addition to the medications being extremely expensive our landlord sold the house we live in and we just recently moved this past weekend. My company downsized, I was off work for 8 months and just found steady employment. We have used all our reserves and are scrambling to come up with enough money to cover living expenses for the very near future, and are not sure how we are going to pay for all her medicine and medical bills, as insurance does not cover very much as they are calling this a "pre-existing condition"..

Writing this and putting it out there for all to see is very humbling and difficult to do, but we truly need some help. We would be happy to pay back what anyone can spare, but we need to get back on our feet first.

We would be eternally grateful for any help that anyone can offer and also ask for your prayers and support during this difficult time!

Got your email this a.m. Please take care of my Beth. Thank you for going thru this with her. Love, Aunt Karen
Chris, I am so sorry to hear about what you and Beth are going through. I remain deeply discouraged about the idiocy of the notion of a pre-existing condition when it comes to anyone getting good healthcare. Your family deserves better as does everyone else's. I hope that Beth is out of the woods soon and headed toward a more complete recovery. -- Lisa
