What is Royal Family KIDS Camp?

A week-long summer camp for abused, neglected, and abandoned children. The primary purpose of Royal Family KIDS Camp is to give children a week of positive memories in the “Cathedral of the Outdoors.” Through the collaboration of community organizations, the Department of Health and Human Services and local churches a “three-stranded cord” is formed to make camp a reality for hurting children in our area.

Why a Camp For Children Of Abuse In Our Area?

According to the Child Welfare League of America, Nebraska has one of the highest rates in the nation of children in foster care per capita. The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services reports that there are well over 5,000 children in Nebraska’s foster care system. It is estimated that 1,314 of these children are ages 6-12. Something must be done!

A Story From One Of Our Volunteers

Sunday night, our camp Grandma talked about a little boy named Blake* who was in foster care in her community. She said she wished Blake could experience camp, but with all of our slots filled and being unsure if he could handle being away, she thought that maybe he would come next year.

The next morning as she and I were going to pick up 4 campers she mentioned Blake again, but there was no way we could add him. Then a boy refused to come.

God hears us.

We communicated the fact that one of boys refused to come. Then Grandma said, “We should get Blake to come.” By Monday afternoon, Blake had made his way to camp so shy and timid. He was so quiet and shy, most of the week you wouldn’t even know he was there.

At least until Thursday night’s variety show when timid Blake got up on stage. Alone. Then the lights went out and we saw he was wrapped in glow sticks. When the loud “Boom Chaka Laka” came on, the calm, quiet boy escaped and the confident, fearless boy emerged creating one of the most memorable moments from the variety show that year.

When his foster mom saw the camp video at the welcome home ceremony, she was in disbelief as our camp Grandma explained that the glow stick covered boy was Blake.

Weeks after camp, the foster mom reported back to our camp social worker that Blake was still walking with that confidence. The confidence only found through Jesus.
