Why You ROC!!
As many of you might know my best friend, Anne Petersen, is battling ovarian cancer. She is the most beautiful, selfless, kind, generous person anyone could hope to know!!! Watching her courageously fight this enormously challenging battle has humbled and enlightened my awareness of life. Running a 5K is a small challenge compared to living a life with ovarian cancer, enduring chemo 3 out of 4 Sundays, losing your hair, living with neuropathy in your hands and feet, waiting anxiously for the monthly results of the CA 125 results, and the ups and downs of all emotions of living with cancer!!!
On September 20, 2015 over a thousand people will come together in Sacramento to Run for Ovarian Cancer (ROC). The run/walk is now in its seventh year. Let’s ROC together! Please join our team and walk/jog/run with us!
Let’s ROC!! 5K is organized by the Ovarian Cancer Education & Research Network, Inc. The mission of OCERN is to advocate for research for the early detection, treatment and cure of ovarian cancer. We promote ovarian cancer education in our communities and will provide a network of resources and support for women and their families. OCERN is a non-profit 501 (c)(3) organization and is comprised of several dedicated volunteers who have a personal connection to ovarian cancer.
22,000 Reasons to ROC!!
Each year more than 22,000 women in the United States are diagnosed with ovarian cancer and approximately 15,000 women die annually from the disease. Unfortunately, most cases are diagnosed in the later stages when the prognosis is poor. However, if diagnosed and treated early, when the cancer is confined to the ovary, the five-year survival rate is over 90 percent. There is currently no accurate screening test for the early detection of ovarian cancer; therefore, it is important to know and understand what the risks and symptoms are. Our goals are to educate women and their families about this disease and also raise much needed funds to further ovarian cancer research.
