Since 1985, we have provided more than 30,000 formerly homeless women and children with the tools to truly break the generational cycle of poverty. Saint John’s Program for Real Change operates the largest homeless program and the only one focuses exclusively on women and children. We serve up to 270 formerly homeless women and children per day and up to 700 a year, representing the fastest growing segment of the homeless population, not only in Sacramento, but nationwide.
Saint John’s works with its clients to address the root causes of homelessness as a symptom of a variety of deep issues, in many cases co-occurring, such as substance abuse, domestic violence, emotional and mental health challenges and multi-generational poverty. By helping to break this cycle of poverty, the mothers who participate in the program are able to provide a brighter future for their children.
Struggling with homelessness and poverty can create great boundaries for many children. More than 60% of our children struggle with learning challenges, and 45% arrive with clear signs of depression and anxiety, which is no surprise with the upheaval of moving from place to place, and the instability and violence they have witnessed. They've worried about their moms and wondered where they would sleep each night or if they would even have dinner.
These families need resources like mental health therapy, alcohol and drug counseling, parenting education, budgeting classes, and employment training. Saint John’s provides these tools at no cost, giving women and their children the chance to escape the cycle of poverty and homelessness.
All proceeds will go to Saint John's Program for Real Change.
